Summary

First run with the Big Foot Running Company that has runs all over Texas. They are fairly new to hosting runs, have some improvement opportunities, but are also doing some things really well at a budget friendly price

Day of the Dead Half Marathon - Houston, Texas (Sugarland) Review

Ran a half marathon and my wife did the 5K distance.  I had a lot of fellow runners I know who did various distances and we all hung for a bit afterwards.  The day turned out to be a very muggy warm day which caused a lot of people to drop down in distance.  I was able to make it through the half distance, but my clothes were sloppy disgusting by the end.  Houston Heat/humidity is no joke.

My gear

HeadSweats running cap (Bought from Good Times Running out of Katy Texas)
St. Johns bay Dri-fit polo
Adidas running shorts
Feetures crew socks

Packet Pick-up / check in / gear

Due to the amount of runners who signed up, they did a packet pick up the evening before the run and the morning of the run.  We were easily able to get our gear, the process was set up and supported and very efficient.  The following morning appeared to be very efficient as well.

Support

They had water and gatorade set up consistently on the course.  I always have to recalibrate from trail runs that have snacks too =)

Course

They had 1 mile, 5K, Quarter marathon and half marathon distances.  The quarter marathon was an out and back, the half being an out and back done twice.  The course was well marked, which was good as it was a very active park.  There was also a biking/walking event and a separate kids charity walk event going on throughout the park and a lot of mountain bikers on some dirt trails that intersect.

Performance

The running company has a lot of categories where you can "place".  I placed first in my age group (The not so young, but not eligible for discounts yet) group and placed third in the masters group.   This is not really close to my PR, but it was a day a lot of people dropped due to the humidity, so I am happy with it.

The run is really meant to be a training day for some upcoming Ultra's I have and for that it worked perfectly.

Run with friends

It was great to see other runners (and of course my wife =) ) out on the run.  It can give you a boost and if they are goofy enough (Mr. Garcia), they can make you smile in a day of weather suckness.

Swag

The swag is pretty sweet.  The medal is hefty, the shirt is comfy and a cool design.  They basically had me at bigfoot to begin with, but the gear is quite sweet for the cost of the run.  With the additional placement pins, they really do a good job on the gear

2 improvements

1. The bathroom situation was basically the park bathrooms and 3 porta pots.  For hundreds of runners just for this event, and another event taking off from the same area.  I am not sure if the park maybe didn't communicate the other event, but it was a bit problematic
2.  They were consistently communicating updates to the run via email, which I like.  However, the changes continued race day morning and when they made some final announcements I couldn't hear them because of music being played.

These are easily correctible and didn't detract much from the enjoyment of the run.  The race crew and volunteers were active and supportive during the run and I think they are doing well for being a fairly new org.

If you are in Texas looking for a run, give them a check out.
